As the sole member of her family to leave home and pursue higher education, she writes about this parallel American universe with the objectivity distance provides and the intimacy of utter familiarity. Às vezes um pedaço de arte é capaz de te fazer sentir como se uma vida inteira tivesse cabido em uma só obra e é exatamente assim que eu me senti lendo o memoir da jesmyn ward... como se eu tivesse passado por gerações da família dela e pela vida de garotos que morreram jovens, a princípio em tragédias isoladas, mas ao enxergar o quadro inteiro vemos que na verdade nenhuma tragédia é isolada dentro de uma comunidade.
