O arrivista George Duroy é uma das personagens mais repulsivas da literatura, e acompanhar sua trajetória de oportunismos e alpinismo social, sem ter vontade de fechar o livro, só é possível porque estamos diante da escrita encantadora, mágica de Maupassant.
O romance é ambientado em Paris, em meio aos principais jornalistas do jornal La Vie Française e seus amigos. Duroy passou três anos no serviço militar na Argélia, e ao encontrar seu antigo amigo Forestier, começa sua carreira como jornalista. De reporter de eventos menores, com pouquíssimo dinheiro, ele gradualmente sobe profissionalmente até tornar-se editor-chefe e um dos homens mais poderosos de Paris. Entretanto, seu caráter continua o mesmo durante toda a narrativa, pobre ou rico, anônimo ou poderoso, o jornalista sempre foi um pérfido. De olho na esposa de Forestier antes mesmo de sua morte, Duroy colecionou amantes casadas e utilizou todas as conexões possíveis para ascender socialmente, especialmente as femininas. Duroy, um libertino muito bonito, deixa um rastro de destruição por onde passa, sem qualquer culpa ou constrangimento. Maupassant, com seu talento para capturar a sociedade burguesa e explorar a natureza do caráter humano, construiu com uma habilidade espetacular esse romance, que obrigatoriamente deve entrar para a lista de leituras de todos!
