My name is Jamie Lewis Ward. I'm fifteen and I live with my sister and grandparents on a farm in the middle of the country. Even with the increasing migration to the outer worlds, parts of earth are still crowded--but not here in the middle of America. Too few people are left to produce the food the cities need and so we are allowed a comfortable, old-fashioned existence as long as we keep growing beef and grains for the rest of our country. I love it, love going to a small school with close friends, fishing and hunting, being self-reliant.
That's why I wasn't happy at all, after the tests, when I was among the chosen.
Why me? I'm an ordinary guy, good at sports, nothing special in the classroom. What is about me that I've been picked to send along with 99 other fifteen-year-olds, half boys and half girls, to a distant settler world?
I can't feel like this is a good thing.
