The year is 1985. Brian Jackson, a working-class kid on full scholarship, has started his first term at university. He has a dark secret—a long-held, burning ambition to appear on the wildly popular British TV quiz show University Challenge—and now, finally, it seems the dream is about to become reality. He's made the school team, and they've completed the qualifying rounds and are limbering up for their first televised match. (And, what's more, he's fallen head over heels for one of his teammates, the beautiful, brainy, and intimidatingly posh Alice Harbinson.) Life seems perfect and triumph inevitable—but as his world opens up, Brian learns that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

David Nicholls
Formado em literatura e teatro inglês, optou pela carreira de ator e recebeu uma bolsa na American Musical and Dramatic Academy de Nova York. De volta a Londres, atuou em espetáculos teatrais no Battersea Arts Centre, The Finborough, West yorkshire Playhouse e Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Entre uma peça e outra, em Londres, Nicholls trabalhava como vendedor na rede de livrarias Waterstone's, em Notting Hill. Após trabalhos freelance, conseguiu emprego como leitor de peças e pesquisador da BBC Radio Drama, o que o levou á edição de roteiros na London Week Television e na Tiger Aspect Productions. Nessa época, começou a escrever e adaptou a peça de Sam Shepard, Simpatico, que se tornou um filme estrelado por Sharon Stone e Nick Nolte, em 1999. Ao longo de sua notável carreira de roteirista, recebeu duas indicações ao BAFTA. Além de Um dia,publicou romances Starter For Ten Understudy.
