Narrated by Morvern Callar, a taciturn, yet sexy and amoral twenty-one-year-old supermarket shelf-stacker, Morvern Callar opens with her discovery of the suicide of her boyfriend in their kitchen. He is a shadowy figure, never named, who has, it seems, given up his own life to help Morvern find her freedom. To escape the boredom of work and the feelings of physical isolation, life revolves around riotous drinking and wild sex. Morvern seems content but detached from it all. But with the money bequeathed to her by her boyfriend, and the credit for the novel he has written, she escapes Scotland for various trips to the Mediterranean rave scene; the heat and hedonism creating a total contrast to the cold desperation of Scotland.
