Inicialmente projetado para ser dois livros distintos, Middlemarch tem como história central as vidas de Dorothea Brooke e Tertius Lydgate.
Na cidade que dá nome ao livro, se passa diversos acontecimentos com os dois protagonistas e uma série de outros personagens.
Um calhamaço que tem um ou outro momento monótono, mas que de um modo geral prende o leitor do início ao fim.
Mary Ann Evans, sob o pseudônimo de George Eliot, deixou para humanidade um dos maiores clássicos da literatura.
