Death, to be precise. And plenty of it. In unpleasant variations. This isn't real life. This isn't even cheesemongering. It's opera. Where the music matters and where an opera house is being terrorised by a man in evening dress with a white mask, lurking in the shadows, occasionally killing people, and most worryingly, sending little notes, writing maniacal laughter with five exclamation marks. Opera can do that to a man. In such circumstances, life has obviously reached that desperate point where the wrong thing to do has to be the right thing to do.

Décimo-oitavo volume da saga Discworld e quinto do arco das Bruxas.

Inicialmente, Maskerade seria uma paródia de O Fantasma da Ópera, mas Pratchett se empolga com a subtrama - o alistamento de outra bruxa no lugar de Magret - e tudo evolui para uma consciente piada envolvendo o mundo operesco e o livro-arbítrio.

Agnes Nitt, a contemplada em questão, tem o dom da clarividência (algo que viria a ser revisitado em Belas Maldições), porém não sente muita atração pelo mundo humilde e trabalhoso da bruxaria. De fato, ela quer ser uma artista.

A grande pergunta jogada pelo autor é... o quão valem os nossos sonhos em face de nossas responsabilidades?
