"Invaders from Earth": A Novel by a Modern Master of Science Fiction -- "The Fate of Two Worlds depend upon information provided by a professional liar!" Earth's colony on Ganymede is under attack. The people of Earth demand reprisal, and the United Nations must take action to protect the interests of the people. But Ted Kennedy is worried. He has been to Ganymede and seen the "people"; and knows a truth too terrifying to reveal. Only he can convince the leaders of Earth that they are victims of a hoax. His life may be forfeit, but he is determined to live long enough to stop the INVADERS FROM EARTH! |...| Like Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth's 'SPACE MERCHANTS' this is a novel of sophisticated government deception in the near future, an exploration of political corruption. Written in 1957 when Silverberg was 22, the novel is cynical and highly suspenseful. Silverberg, long recognized as a great science fiction writer, is a multiple award winner. (...) Invaders from Earth is an expansion of "We, the Marauders". For an earlier work (1957), it has held up fairly well, and a modern reader has to make only slight allowances for the dated aspects of it. It's set in 2064, and a few of the technological and historical bits need some adjustment. There is some persistence of 50s gender roles: while the protagonist's wife does have a career, she is treated in many ways as the little woman homemaker. Most of the women in the story are secreteries or receptionists; none are executives. One Silverberg theme that is at the core of this story is a distrust of authority, including the media and large corporations. ===== Invaders from Earth (First published 1958) / Paperback August 1, 2001 by Robert Silverberg '-' Ted Kennedy, advertising executive for the Ganymede Project, is made aware of a plan for genocide, for the murder of all the peaceful natives of Ganymede in furtherance of commerce...and it is his decision as to whether he collaborates with, facilitates this genocide or - by opposing it, by bringing the truth to the public -- he risks not mere failure but utter destruction... Robert Silverberg's comment on his novel: ..."it involves a Madison Avenue hoax involving a nonexistent colony on Ganymede being worked up for political purposes, some sort of cynical disinformation campaign of the kind that was science fiction in l958 but is everyday news these days." Everyday news and, of course, the premise of the successful and frighteningly premonitory film, Wag the Dog'.'
