The Charlie Tiptree series proper begins with Charlie had His Chance. Rowena on the Edge is one of four short prequels, being around eight thousand words, and is newly revised. Chronologically, it is the earliest of the four.

The weather is glorious. All Rowena Hepples school exams are done with. The holidays lie ahead. She is not, one might accurately say, at all unattractive.
What, then, is blighting the poor girls prospects and darkening her thoughts? Its a little complicated, but circumstances are often to blame in these situations. A teenagers parents can be tiresome, but Rowenas seem even more tiresome than most. Poverty can grind one down - and weeds are endlessly depressing too. Oh yes, and there are men! Men can be a right damn nuisance when youre blonde, beautiful and far too polite for your own good.
