The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun is a poem in the tradition of the medieval "lay", also illustrated by the Lay of the Children of Hurin, and in the Lay of Leithian. This 556-verse-long poem tells the tragic story of a lord who sacrifices his life by love: in order to have a child with his wife, then to remain faithful to his spouse, he gives his life to a witch.

Interessante, mas não para deleite

Como um ávido fã de Tolkien e de sua criação maior, a Terra-Média, me senti na obrigação de enveredar pelas obras paralelas compiladas por Christopher Tolkien ou as editadas por Verlyn Flieger. A leitura é um tanto quanto cansativa, já que o inglês empregado é bastante arcaico. A história tem sua riqueza folclórica e é, sem dúvidas, um registro notável do gênero literário (o que é bem pontuado nas notas preambulares do livro). The Story of Kullervo me pareceu ter uma pegada mais atrativa, e creio que The Lay of Aotrou & Itroun realmente valha a quem deseja ter em mãos uma peça histórica de uma literatura antiga (folclore celta) para estudo ou até mesmo pesquisa.
