This is the second of the "Goddess Trilogy", but was the closing volume in my readings. This mistake proved to be a good thing. This "Art & Artifacts" has a sense of closure not present in the "Encyclopedia". In addition, the customary interview in the last section deals with the art department, but covering in detail every game. It even has tidbits not present anywhere in the other books. For example, the famous art in the Hylian Shield contains an eagle carrying the Triforce. At the time, it was only because it looked cool, but later came to be associated with the Hylian Crest itself, and eagles, wind, and air became a central theme in The Legend. It is very interesting to compare the role of concept arts in earlier games with contemporary ones. For the 8-bit era, pixels can convey only so much, so the manuals are loaded with history and concept arts. Basically, they give fuel to the imagination, "THIS is what you're exploring!". Later games can tell the whole history by themselves, but even so art can tell much more. Independent of the time, the game system, the platform, the team, one thing remains consistent in all those years: they're always innovating, be it adding, removing or changing content. The art style changes, the design changes. But the feeling that you're looking at a Zelda game is always there. It is always present. It really brings a sense of belonging. One of the many things that makes the The Legend of Zelda so unique.
