Uma narrativa sobre o ostracismo social

Aqui Steinbeck nos traz a rotina de um grupo de pessoas que vivem em uma rua paupérrima denominada Cannery Row, na fictícia cidade de Monterey, na Califórnia. Somos apresentados a Doc, Mac e seus outros amigos, que apesar de todas as dificuldades financeiras buscam serem felizes com o pouco que lhes é dado: uma cabana de pescadores como moradia e grandes despesas em uma mercearia local para poderem se alimentar.

Conhecemos ainda Lee Chong, o ganancioso mas com lapsos de bondade enquanto proprietário da única mercearia existente em Cannery Row. Temos também Dora Flood, dona de um bordel, "O Bandeira de Urso", que sempre busca ajudar a comunidade em tudo o que lhe é possível.

É uma história curta, mas proveitosa e nos faz refletir sobre como o ostracismo social (em especial o caso de Mack e seus amigos) é um fator "possibilista" para nos tornar pessoas melhores ou piores em nossas virtudes. Outra reflexão relevante é acerca de como alguns aspectos da vida humana são transitórios,efêmeros. Portanto, não poderia deixar de recomendar um autor tão maravilhoso como Steinbeck (esse é o quarto livro de sua autoria que leio).
