Sixteen-year-old Jill Whitaker dreams of two things: fixing up a 1970 Triumph Spitfire convertible side-by-side with her dad and kissing her best friend, irrepressible flirt, Sean Addison. Both dreams are crushed when she walks in on her mother wrapped around Sean. The next day, her mom’s gone, leaving only a post-it goodbye note, Jill can’t bring herself to even look at Sean, and her Dad–who usually makes everything better–has completely shut down. It feels like he’s abandoned her too, and that’s what devastates her most. Meeting her neighbor, Daniel, a guy with a scarred past and an even more toxic home life than hers, shouldn’t change anything, but it does. When Jill intervenes one night after Daniel’s mom hurls a lamp at his head, they become each other’s escape and the first flickers of a forbidden romance kindle. But the more time she spends with Daniel over that long, hot summer, the more Jill realizes that she can’t escape her own broken family or the feelings she still has for Sean. Facing her life head-on may mean learning that the father she idolizes isn’t perfect after all, and she doesn’t have a shot of fixing anyone else’s life if she doesn’t at least try to fix her own.

Abigail Johnson
Abigail was born in Pennsylvania. When she was twelve, her family traded in snow storms for year round summers, and moved to Arizona. Abigail chronicled the entire cross-country road trip (in a purple spiral bound notebook that she still has) and has been writing ever since. She became a tetraplegic after breaking her neck in a car accident when she was seventeen, but hasn’t let that stop her from bodysurfing in Mexico, writing and directing a high school production of Cinderella, and publishing her first novel.
