A doutora Fredrika Bimm (também conhecida como Fred) sempre soube que era diferente, mas ser uma sereia não quer dizer que tenha que amar o oceano. Quando Fred quer embeber-se em água salgada, prefere a piscina que sua mãe construiu. O trabalho de Fred no New England Aquarium permite o uso de seus ativos e habilidades para comunicar-se com os peixes. Mas sua vida tranquila se vê desbaratada quando dois homens bem apessoados e decididos aparecem em sua vida. O primeiro é o investigador associado do aquario, o doutor Thomas PEarson, e o segundo é o Elevado Principe Artur do Mar NEgro. Não havendo chocado antes com com outra sereia, Fred se sente atraida e repelida ao mesmo tempo por Artur.
Os dois homens chegaram porque alguem está contaminando deliberadamente o Porto de Boston, e querem a ajuda de Fred para descobrir o culpado. É um trabalho dificil trabalhar intimamente com dois homens muito desejaveis, mas alguem tem que fazê-lo!
