O you youths, western youths, So impatient, full of action, full of manly pride and friendship...

On the beach at night alone is a selected collection of poems of the book Leaves of Grass. The 21 poem book works as a short introduction to the artist, in my opinion, the best poet America has ever created. Unfortunately, Walt Whitman is a kind of man that almost doesn’t exist anymore, a mix of multitudes and contradictions: Fierce but sensitive, Honest but shameless, romantic but lascivious; an unique soul. Rereading these fragments made me reevaluate my attitudes towards the current world. My favorite here is “Pioneers! O Pioneers!”. It’s mesmerizing. The images of brotherhood and friendship in the lines are so abrasive! It makes me think: what went wrong? There’s no space for “Walt Whitmans” in the modern world, but I know the echoes of him, can bring him back. Like he said in the poem Full of Life now: “When you read these I that was visible am become invisible, Now it is you, compact, visible, realizing my poems, seeking me, Fancying how happy you were if I could be with you and become your comrade; Be it as if I were with you( Be not too certain but I am now with you.)”

    Walt Whitman
