Charles John Huffam Dickens
Charles John Huffam Dickens foi o mais popular dos romancistas da era vitoriana e contribuiu para a introdução da crítica social na literatura de ficção inglesa. A fama dos seus romances e contos pode ser comprovada pelo fato de todos os seus livros continuarem a ser editados. Entre os seus maiores clássicos destacam-se "Oliver Twist", "A Christmas Carol" e "David Copperfield". Dickens era filho de John Dickens e de Elizabeth Barrow. Educado por sua mãe, tomou gosto pelos livros. Durante três anos freqüentou uma escola particular. Contudo o seu pai foi preso por dívidas e, ainda adolescente, Dickens teve que trabalhar em uma fábrica que produzia graxa para sapatos. Alguns anos depois, a situação financeira da família melhorou, graças a uma herança recebida pelo pai. Mas sua mãe não permitiu que ele saísse logo da fábrica, o que fez com que Dickens não a perdoasse por isso. As más condições de trabalho da classe operária tornar-se-iam um dos temas recorrentes da sua obra. Em 1827, Dickens começou a trabalhar em um cartório. Apaixonado pela filha de um banqueiro, Maria Beadnell, suportou a desaprovação do romance pelos pais da moça, que acabou se tornando indiferente a ele. Em 1832 conseguiu um emprego como repórter no jornal "Morning Chronicle". Passou a publicar crônicas humorísticas sob o pseudônimo de Boz, reunidas mais tarde como "Esboços feitos por Boz". Com isso Dickens ganhou espaço no jornal para apresentar os capítulos de "As Aventuras do Sr. Pickwick", que estabeleceu o seu nome como escritor. A 2 de Abril de 1836 Dickens se casou com Catherine Hogarth., com quem teve dez filhos. Dois anos depois começou a divulgar, em folhetins semanais, "Oliver Twist" onde, pela primeira vez, apontava os males sociais da era vitoriana. O romance era ilustrado por Cruikshank. Em 1838, Dickens escreveu "Vida e Aventura de Nicholas Nickleby", e, depois, "Loja de Antiguidades" (1840), "Barnaby Rudge" (1841) e "Martin Chuzzlewitt" (1843/44), escrito após uma viagem aos Estados Unidos. Em 1843, publicou o seu mais famoso livro de Natal, "A Christmas Carol", ao qual se seguiriam outros, como "The Chimes" (1844), que escreveu durante uma viagem a Gênova e "O Grilo da Lareira" (1845). Em 1849 publicou um de seus mais conhecidos romances, "David Copperfield", inspirado em grande parte, na sua própria vida. Aos poucos sua obra se tornou mais crítica em relação às instituições inglesas. Seguem esta linha os seus livros "Assim São Dombey e Filho" (1847), "A Casa Sombria" (1852) e "Tempos Difíceis". Dickens separou-se da sua mulher em 1858. A causa da separação teria sido a atriz Ellen Ternan, que acompanhou o escritor até ao final dos seus dias, apesar de a união nunca ter sido reconhecida oficialmente. Dickens escreveu ainda "História de Duas Cidades" (1859), "Grandes Esperanças" (1861) e "Nosso Amigo Comum" (1864). Nos últimos anos de sua vida iniciou o livro "O Mistério de Erwin Drood", mas morreu antes de concluí-lo.
