Parte do cânone Budista, foi escrito em pali, língua antiga indiana. É uma antologia de ensinamentos budistas sobre ética, atribuídos ao próprio Buda. Os 423 versos são máximas morais, sobre vários temas como 'velhice', 'felicidade' entre outros. Embora aparentemente separados, um fio fundamental percorre todos os versículos, já que os ensinamentos de Buda concentram-se no caminho, o 'magga', que liberta uma pessoa de uma vida que está intrinsecamente ligada a desejos, paixão, tristezas, ódio em ciclo interminável. Como os males que perturbam as nossas vidas decorrem da avidya (ignorância, equívoco), todos os esforços da doutrina são, portanto, dirigidos para iluminar essa escuridão, para nos levar à sabedoria.
