The final version of The Fox was written in 1921 at Fontana Vecchia at Taormina in Sicily, where Lawrence was then living. Set in the months immediately after the end of the First World War, the story concerns two young women, who are attempting to make a success as farmers, and the effect the arrival of a young man has on their lives. The action concentrates tightly, almost claustrophobically, on the intense and absorbing drama of this typically Lawrencian "war of the sex", which leads up to a powerful and disturbing conclusion.
