For a change this story is narrated by Ennin himself, rather than his servant, Kukai. I should stress that this particular short story isn’t a mystery, but one based around addiction. Ennin himself reminisces on when he first met the great artist Ryou, who has recently died. When these two men first come together it is because Ryou has been kidnapped by Ennin, as Ryou’s sister pleads with the great detective to help her brother sober up. Ryou paints macabre pictures that have brought him fame and ‘friends’, people who are hangers on and spongers. Living a hedonistic lifestyle and becoming an alcoholic Ennin is determined to alter things, but can he? This is quite an interesting little tale and reminds us all of the need to have some purpose and direction in life, as well as taking pride in oneself.
