Two decades after its original publication, it remains a profoundly disturbing novel, an immaculately wrought portrait of a world (California on the cusp of the 70s) where too much freedom made a lot of people ill.

Maria, Didion e a glamourização da depressão

Mesmo Play It as It Lays sendo um livro curto, ele tem espaço o suficiente pra ser poético e trágico. Ao contrário de outros romances literários que são longos e arrastados, a obra impressiona por ser direta ao ponto ao mesmo tempo que consegue carregar muita sutileza em si. Todos os capítulos conseguem suscitar no leitor algum tipo de emoção, mesmo que às vezes seja apenas um desconforto extremo pela situação da protagonista.

Joan Didion é uma excelente escritora, quase uma diretora de cinema com palavras. A única crítica é que, de fato, esse é um livro sobre depressão e sobre uma pessoa deprimida. Por vezes, Didion parece glamourizar a depressão e a apatia de Maria, que chega a ser insuportável por boa parte do livro.

Enfim, Play It as It Lays é sensacional e uma recomendação pra qualquer fã de literatura, só faltou um pouquinho de ativismo pra saúde mental.
