On a mild winter's evening in 1850, Isabella Robinson set out for a party. Her carriage bumped across the wide cobbled streets of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town and drew up at 8 Royal Circus, a grand sandstone house lit by gas lamps. Não se trata bem de um romance, mas sim de uma pesquisa realizada pela autora sobre os divórcios na época vitoriana. É uma história verídica com uma escrita envolvente. No decorrer do divorcio dos Robinson's acompanhamos também a decisão de outros divórcios ocorridos na época, assim como as ideias rígidas sobre o papel da mulher no casamento, a opressão sofrida pelas mulheres,a situação da mulher diante de um divorcio, a sexualidade da mulher, as leis sobre o divórcio, que com o tempo foram sendo melhoradas e as referencias de alguns tratamentos médicos realizados pela população. A protagonista Isabella, é uma mulher inteligente, adora ler, discutir sobre a literatura e conhecer outras opiniões, e alem de romântica. É uma boa leitura para quem deseja conhecer a real situação da mulher vitoriana.Outra coisa interessante,é que a autora faz referencias de vários autores da época e suas obras do decorrer dos acontecimentos, assim como também a opinião, e a vida de alguns desses autores famosos. São citados: Jane Austen, as irmãs Brontë, Balzac, Darwin, Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Elizabeth Gaskell, Wolfgang Goethe e outros. A autora cita também as reportagens que saiam nos principais jornais da época.
