A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Carry the fire

"The Road" não é um livro que eu escolheria por livre e espontânea vontade para ler - e que bom que essa leitura foi obrigatória de uma das minhas disciplinas na faculdade, senão nunca teria encontrado esta joia. Que livro potente, triste e cheio de simbolismos. Apesar de não acontecer muita "ação", a sensação de vazio, perda de noção de tempo e a esperança em um fim do mundo foram representadas de forma impecável. O silêncio é palpável, mas é impossível não sentir empatia pelo pai e pelo menino.

Adorei os diferentes usos de linguagem explorados pelo autor: palavras mais complexas e metafóricas na narração, palavras bastante simples para os diálogos entre os personagens, um ótimo reflexo de uma comunicação que definha. Gostei muito também das alegorias do sagrado e os sentidos evocados por elas.

A obra me fez pensar constantemente: por que esse pai e esse filho continuam, se não há um único resquício de esperança? Minha pergunta foi respondida no final, quando eles mencionam a necessidade de "carregar a chama". A esperança, no fundo, estava ali presente sim. E a estrada pode ser uma alegoria para a própria vida.

Belíssimo, recomendo muito. Mas caso leia, se prepare para uma jornada dolorosa e bela.
