During the 1960's, mainstream America viewed surfers as the idyllic expression of freedom. Most surfers didn't care about mainstream America's perception. They just wanted to go surfing. Unfortunately, the vast majority of surfers were draft aged and had to make a hard choice - either go to war or evade the draft. The Vietnam War was a harsh wake up call. Virtually all of the extraordinary photographs in Between the Lines are from the private collections of surfers. These images convey the very personal, and often intense, paths these young men experienced during the Vietnam War. Although the format allows you to enjoy this book without the benefit of the film, it is intended as a companion to the documentary, also entitled Between the Lines.
