Sophie Whitehouse tem a família perfeita de comercial de margarina: casada com James, uma figura pública importante, e um marido bem sucedido, bonitão e pai carinhoso. Porém, a perfeição deste lar é posta à prova quando James é acusado de um crime terrível e esta família verá sua vida mudar da noite para o dia, enquanto enfrentam um longo processo de julgamento na justiça.

Kate Woodcroft é a advogada de acusação deste caso. É ela quem vai lutar com todas as suas forças para provar que James é culpado.

O livro vai alternando os capítulos entre a versão destas duas mulheres para os fatos que estão acontecendo. Enquanto uma tenta a todo custo restaurar a paz de seu lar, a outra vai fazer de tudo para provar que nem tudo é o que parece.

Ao longo do livro, alguns capítulos são centrados em outros personagens e também seguimos uma linha temporal há mais ou menos 20 anos antes dos acontecimentos atuais, em que vamos descobrindo vários acontecimentos do passado.

Bem, eu comecei a ouvir o audiobook deste livro e não tava conseguindo me concentrar na narrativa da história. Provavelmente porque peguei uma versão em inglês, não consegui me apegar à história. Até que mais ou menos na metade do livro, comprei o ebook em inglês mesmo e comecei tudo de novo. E foi aí que a história fluiu.

Para quem gosta de histórias de tribunal, eu recomendo demais este livro. Toda a parte que acontece durante o julgamento é de arrepiar, e você vai virando página por página até que o veredito seja dado. Não é uma leitura fácil, o livro aborda um tema muito pesado, porém, ele traz algumas discussões muito importantes e interessantes, e foi muito bom ver personagens femininas tão diferentes no centro da história, com todos os seus conflitos internos e suas lutas.

Tem uma parte que a história se alonga um pouco demais, além de algumas descrições que me deixaram bem incomodada (se atentem aos gatilhos!), além de alguns detalhes pouco críveis, porém, foi uma história que me surpreendeu em muitos quesitos, trouxe ótimos personagens e muitos momentos de reflexão.

A netflix adaptou este livro para uma minissérie com seis episódios, e fiquei muito surpreendida pela adaptação, que com algumas alterações previsíveis, foi muito bem produzida. A produção pegou leve em muitos detalhes, o livro é muito mais descritivo e pesado.
