It is 1810, and in Napoleon's determination to conquer Portugal -- and push the British back to the sea -- he sends his largest army yet across the Spanish frontier. There, beneath the British guns, Sharpe is reunited with his shattered but grateful company, and meets his enemies in a thrilling and decisive fight. Bernard Cornwell
Bernard Cornwell nasceu em Londres em 1944, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Seu pai era um aviador canadense e sua mãe trabalhava como auxiliar da Força Aérea Britânica. Ele foi adotado por uma família em Essex, Inglaterra, que pertencia à seita religiosa chamada Peculiar People (Pessoas Peculiares, e, segundo o escritor, eram mesmo). Ele fugiu para a Universidade de Londres, incluindo em seu nome o sobrenome de sua mãe, Cornwell. Depois de uma ponta como professor, foi para a rede de televisão BBC, onde trabalhou por 10 anos. Começou como um pesquisador no programa Nationwide e terminou como Chefe de Assuntos Televisivos Atuais da BBC na Irlanda do Norte. Foi enquanto trabalhava na cidade irlandesa de Belfast que ele conheceu Judy, uma americana que estava visitando o país, e por quem se apaixonou.
