In a village far away, all the animals and birds disappeared many years ago after some unknown catastrophe. Only a rebellious young teacher and an old man dare to talk about animals to the children, who have never seen these mythical creatures. A stubborn girl called Maya and her friend Matti are determined to unravel the mystery of where the animals have gone. They venture into the depths of the forest in their quest, terrified and hopeful of what they may encounter.
