    John Spencer was born in Radcliffe, Manchester, where he has lived all his life.He played snooker only locally until 1963-4, when he won the Northern championship at Middlesbrough at his first attempt. He went on to be narrowly defeated in the English Amateur Championship final in Birmingham, and subsequently reached the final in the two following seasons, losing at Blackpool and winning at Huddersfield. In 1966 he represented England in the World Amateur championship in Karachi where he finished second. On his return to Britain, John Spencer turned professional and at his first attempt won the World Professional Snooker Championship in London in 1969. He lost the title in Bolton the following April, regained it in Australia in 1970, to lose it again in February 1972. During the past two years he has undertaken exhibition tours to Bermuda, India and twice to Canada, where on each occasion he achieved the maximum break of 147.
