Hilary e John Travis fazem uma obra bem detalhada, abordando profundamente temas específicos. O livro é bem técnico/científico, sendo indicado para leitores que já possuem conhecimento do tema e querem se aprofundar no assunto.

O texto foca principalmente em achados arqueológicos e análises de literatura, percorrendo os escudos da República e do início e fim do Império. Na sequência os autores descrevem detalhadamente a produção de um escudo e analisam seu desempenho contra espada, flecha e pilo (pilum).

No fim do livro encontram-se seis apêndices, sendo o primeiro sobre a origem e desenvolvimento do exército romano e o segundo sobre os locais e métodos de fabricação dos equipamentos militares. Os demais são sobre a madeira, couro, metal, gesso, pigmentos e tintas usadas na construção dos escudos. Esses quatro últimos apêndices são extremamente técnicos, entrando profundamente em processos químicos e biológicos (tanto vegetal como animal).

O livro conta com 92 ilustrações e 14 tabelas ao longo do texto, e uma seção com 21 fotos coloridas.
