When maidservant Muna joins the household of fabled witch Mak Genggang, she and her sister Sakti are in dire need of magical protection. They're under a mysterious curse--one that has left them with no memories of who they were before they awoke on the shores of the island of Janda Baik. It's a curse that may kill Muna's sister, if she doesn't find a way to break it. The secret of breaking the curse may lie in distant Britain, where the Sorceress Royal has established an academy to train women in magic, defying the opposition of her countrymen. When Muna is sent to the Sorceress Royal's academy, she must learn to conduct herself as a proper English lady would--not to mention trick the English magiciennes into believing she is a magical prodigy. But as Muna investigates the curse, the clues lead her to Fairy, and soon she is drawn into a conflict between fairies and mortals that she--and Britain--may not survive.
