A Inquisição e o Congresso.

A peça de Miller, que também já foi um filme de 1996 estrelado por Daniel Day-Lewis e Winona Rider, é uma ótima exposição da Caça as Bruxas ocorrida no século XVII nos EUA, e também durante o Macarthismo no século passado.

Assim como o autor e muitos outros artistas foram intimidados pelo congresso estadunidense para revelar e implicar amigos e colegas que teriam participado de reuniões comunistas, John Proctor e outros personagens na vila de Salem são interrogados e torturados na tentativa de expôr o trabalho do demônio.

É reveladora a forma como Miller relaciona as ditas reuniões com uma brincadeira de jovens, pouco mais que crianças, das meninas dançarinas que mais tarde acusariam dezenas de pessoas de bruxaria. Igualmente devastadoras foram as consequências de ambos os processos, religiosos e políticos.

Os diálogos são ótimos, de cada palavra parece pingar o medo e o despeito que Miller sentiu na época.

A minha edição é simples, sem prefácio ou posfácio. O nível de inglês recomendado para ler a obra é o avançado devido a algumas estruturas e vocabulário mais específico.
