The Khao San Road, Bangkok - first stop for the hordes of rootless young Westerners traveling in Southeast Asia. On Richard's first night there, a fellow traveler slashes his wrists, bequeathing to Richard a meticulously drawn map to "the Beach." The Beach, as Richard comes to learn, is a subject of legend among the young travelers in Asia: a lagoon hidden from the sea, with white sand and coral gardens, freshwater falls surrounded by jungle, plants untouched for thousands of years. There, it is rumored, a carefully selected international few have settled into a communal Eden. Richard sets off with a young French couple to an island hidden away in an archipelago forbidden to tourists. They discover the Beach, and it is as beautiful as it is reputed to be. Yet over time it becomes clear that Beach culture, as Richard calls it, has troubling, even deadly undercurrents.

Alex Garland
Garland é filho do cartunista Nick Garland. Estudou na University College School, em Hampstead e na University of Manchester, onde se formou em história da arte. Vive atualmente em Manchester. Seu primeiro romance foi The Beach, publicado em 1996 e que lhe trouxe grande repercussão. O sucesso do romance fez que com fosse adaptado para o cinema no filme de Danny Boyle, A Praia, com Leonardo DiCaprio. Seu segundo romance foi The Tesseract, publicado em 1998, também adaptado para o cinema, em filme estrelado por Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. Em 2003, a pedido de Danny Boyle, escreveu o roteiro de Extermínio. Seu terceiro romance, The Coma foi publicado em 2004 e ilustrado por seu pai. Alex também escreveu o roteiro do filme Sunshine, estrelado por Cillian Murphy, sendo esse seu segundo trabalho para o diretor Boyle. Garland também participou da sequência de Extermínio, Extermínio 2, mas como produtor executivo. Recentemente, escreveu o roteiro inicial de Halo, filme baseado na famosa série de video-games Halo.
