Olivia Howard Dunbar
Biógrafa, contista, crítica e jornalista, Olivia Howard Dunbar (1873-1953) nasceu no estado de Massachusetts, Estados Unidos, e faleceu em Nova York. Ela é mais conhecida por sua ficção sobrenatural e seus ensaios em defesa do subgênero literário. Dunbar também foi participante ativa do movimento pelo sufrágio feminino, sendo seus contos centrados em personagens femininas e abarcando ideais de cunho feminista. Em 1914, ela se casou com o editor e poeta norte-americano Ridgely Torrence (1874-1950), com quem morou na Washington Square, no sul de Manhattan, Nova York. Enquanto escritora, Dunbar publicou em jornais, como The New York World, e periódicos, como Harper's Magazine e The Dial. Ela é autora de um único romance intitulado A House in Chicago, publicado em 1947. Seus ensaios a examinar a situação do fantasma na ficção, bem como em proposição do conto sobrenatural psicológico são: The Decay of the Ghost in Fiction (1905) e The Present Status of the Ghost (1912). Já seus contos, apesar de poucos, ilustram bem a visão de Dunbar acerca do renascimento do conto fantasmagórico que ela sugeria: • The Shell of Sense (seu mais conhecido conto e que intitula uma coleção por Jessica Amanda Salmonson); • The Sycamore; • The Dream-Baby; • The Long Chamber.
