The classic theme of betrayal is the basis for Troilus and Cressida, a subtle play in which sexual and political treachery co-exist. Set against the background of the Trojan War, the protagonists act out their personal tragedy as the greater tragedy of the Fall of Troy unfolds.

"The pleasures of 'Troilus and Cressida', though peculiar, are profuse: Shakespeare's exuberance of invention is manifest at every point. (...) It is a play that defeats any wholly coherent interpretation (...). There is a bitterness, somehow both personal and impersonal, in Shakespeare's version of this essentually medieval tale (of which Homer knew nothing).
