But the large claim that Lawrence’s masterpiece has made on the attention of readers and critics stems less from this fact than from the deeper parallel history he provides for the Brangwens—a history of the growth of their souls, moving in a great arc from sensuality to self-awareness and freedom.

David Herbert Lawrence
David Herbert Lawrence ou D. H. Lawrence (Nottingham, 11 de Setembro de 1885 — Vence, 2 de Março de 1930) foi um controverso e prolífico escritor inglês, conhecido pelos seus romances, poemas e livros de viagens. Lawrence pertence à escola modernista. A sua obra aborda temas considerados controversos no início do século XX, como a sexualidade e as relações humanas por vezes com características destrutivas e estende-se a praticamente todos os géneros literários, tendo publicado novelas, contos, poemas, peças de teatro, livros de viagens, traduções, livros sobre arte, crítica literária e cartas pessoais. Em conjunto, a obra expõe uma alargada reflexão sobre os efeitos desumanizantes da modernidade e da industrialização. Os temas que Lawrence abordou tornaram a obra importantíssima para a compreensão de uma época influenciada por Freud e por Nietzsche. "O Amante de Lady Chatterley" foi proibido na época e passou a circular clandestinamente. "O Arco Íris" foi considerado obsceno. E "Mulheres Apaixonadas" foi recusado pelos editores de Londres, só foi publicado cinco anos depois em Nova Iorque. Além de escritor, Lawrence também era pintor e produziu muitas obras expressionistas.
