Haruki Murakami conta que, quando foi à redação da New Yorker pela primeira vez, notou que o então editor da revista, Robert Gottlieb (que também foi um dos editores de livros mais importantes dos EUA), tinha três cópias de As Irmãs Makioka em sua prateleira.
