Washington Black is an eleven-year-old field slave who knows no other life than the Barbados sugar plantation where he was born. When his master's eccentric brother chooses him to be his manservant, Wash is terrified of the cruelties he is certain await him. But Christopher Wilde, or "Titch," is a naturalist, explorer, scientist, inventor, and abolitionist. He initiates Wash into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky; where two people, separated by an impossible divide, might begin to see each other as human; and where a boy born in chains can embrace a life of dignity and meaning. Esi Edugyan
Esi Edugyan nasceu e foi criada em Calgary, Alberta; seus pais eram imigrantes de Gana. Ela estudou escrita criativa na Universidade de Victoria, onde foi orientada por Jack Hodgins. Obteve um mestrado no Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars. Seu trabalho apareceu pela primeira vez em antologias e ela é autora de dois romances. Seu romance de estreia, The Second Life of Samuel Tyne, escrito aos 24 anos, foi publicado em 2004. (2005), conta a história de um homem que herda uma mansão em uma pequena cidade do Canadá e muda sua família para lá, acreditando que esta é sua segunda chance de vida. Foi indicado para o prêmio Hurston-Wright Legacy em 2005. Seu segundo romance, Half-Blood Blues (2011), é sobre uma banda de jazz mista na Segunda Guerra Mundial em Paris e Berlim e o que acontece depois que seu trompetista estrela, Hieronymus Falk, desaparece em 1940.
