Victor Lvovich Kibalchich
Victor Lvovich Khibalchich, mais conhecido como Victor Serge, nasceu na França filho de exilados russos. Inicialmente era um anarquista, tendo ingressado no Partido Comunista Russo ao chegar a Petrogrado em fevereiro de 1919 e passar trabalhar, como jornalista, editor e tradutor, para a Internacional Comunista. Em 1923, como representante do Comintern na Alemanha, ajudou a preparar a malograda insurreição no outono de 1923. Neste mesmo ano, Serge ingressou na Oposição de Esquerda. Foi expulso do partido em 1928 e passou a escrever obras de ficção que foram publicadas principalmente na França. Em 1933 foi preso e exilado, tendo sido deportado da Rússia em abril de 1936, após uma campanha internacional em seu favor. Ao chegar ao Ocidente manteve contato com Trotsky, chegando a integrar a IV Internacional, porém em pouco tempo discordou da sua linha de atuação, separando-se da mesma em 1937. Em 1940 escapou da invasão nazista a Paris e refugiou-se no México, tendo passado os últimos anos de sua vida isolado e morrido na miséria logo após o trigésimo aniversário da revolução bolchevista, em novembro de 1947.
