Lydia Quixano Perez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with four books he would like to buy—two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. Que história pesada... e viva o sonho americano!

Eu peguei esse livro pra ler por dois motivos, 1- pela polemica que envolve ele e a autora e 2- pelo tema imigração ilegal que é tanto debatido atualmente, e eu não me arrependo de ter lido, pra mim já é uma das melhores leituras do ano, simplesmente impactante, bem escrito, envolvente e com personagens que transbordam sentimentos diversos, enfim não me lembro qual foi a última vez que li quase 500 págs em 2 dias.

A trama já se inicia com uma chacina e um plano improvisado de fuga. A história vai acompanhar toda jornada da mexicana Lydia com seu filho Luca de apenas 8 anos para fugir das ameaças de morte feitas por um poderoso chefe de um cartel e o destino deles é o EUA, só daí você já deduz toda a tensão que vai rolar, pois todos sabemos que a travessia da fronteira entre México e EUA é o inferno na terra e maioria morre ou é sequestrado, estuprado... paralelo a isso também vamos acompanhando através de flashbacks o que aconteceu no passado para que Lydia tomasse a drástica decisão de fugir de sua terra natal deixando todos os seus familiares mortos no quintal de casa. Pesado!

Eu já assisti muitos documentários sobre carteis, imigrações ilegais e assuntos correlacionados e eu respeito a pesquisa da autora sobre o tema mesmo ela não sendo mexicana e acho um absurdo pessoas ameaçarem ela de morte por “se apropriar da história alheia”, preguiça de gente assim, pelo amor de Deus, é uma história fictícia, se for julgar, julgue por achar ruim e não pela autora ser americana, até porque existe mesmo uma romantização dos EUA e também existe muita violência extrema em países latinos e é basicamente isso que ela explora. Afinal, Lydia vai conseguir seu lugar ao sol na terra do tio Trump?

Recomendo demais essa leitura. Vale muito a pena!
