Matthew Phipps Shiell
Matthew Phipps Shiel nasceu na ilha de Montserrat (West Indies) - mãe mulata e pai parte irlandes. Shiell foi educado nas ilhas Barbados e em 1885 e foi para a Inglaterra e estudou línguas e Medicina, em Londres, onde o nome de família foi alterado para Shiel. Depois de trabalhar como professor e tradutor, ele começou a escrever histórias para a <i>The Strand</i> e outras revistas. Sua primeira fama se deve a dois livros de conto muito influenciados por Edgar Allan Poe: <i>Prince Zaleski</i> (1895) e <i>Shapes In The Fire</i> (1896). Seu primeiro romance, <i>The Rajah's Sapphire</i> (1896), foi baseado em uma trama de William Thomas Stead, a quem supõe-se ter contratado Shiel para escrevê-lo.
