Ao explorar de maneira implacável os fantasmas e as culpas da Áustria do pós-guerra, Bernhard conquistou a fama – merecida – de um intelectual polêmico, ora admirado, ora execrado por seus compatriotas. Seu ressentimento pela Áustria é refletido em seu testamento, onde proíbe a encenação das suas peças teatrais em território austríaco. Mesmo após sua morte, suas obras foram objeto de controvérsia, especialmente o trabalho Heldenplatz (1988), no qual Bernhard denuncia o ressentimento anti-semita ainda latente no país.
