War with the Newts (1936) is Karel Capek's darkly humorous allegory of early twentieth-century Czech politics. Captain van Toch discovers a colony of newts in Sumatra which can not only be taught to trade and use tools, but also to speak. As the rest of the world learns of the creatures and their wonderful capabilities, it is clear that this new species is ripe for exploitation - they can be traded in their thousands, will do the work no human wants to do, and can fight - but the humans have given no thought to the terrible consequences of their actions.

'I gave them my word that if they would bring me the pearl shells I would give them harpoons and knives in exchange, so that they could defend themselves, see? That's an honest deal, sir.'

A Guerra das Salamandras traz uma história aonde é descoberta uma nova espécie de salamandra que são muito inteligentes, e aprendem e evoluem muito rapidamente.

A obra nos mostra o quanto a humanidade pode ser gananciosa e exploradora, espremendo ao máximo para tirar tudo que é possível de uma classe que considera inferior.

A obra escrita no período entre guerras anteviu as experiências assombrosas que o ser humano pode fazer, e acabou fazendo poucos anos depois durante a segunda guerra mundial.

Uma das reflexões mais interessantes do livro é o quanto as diferenciações que a humanidade criou nos prejudica a termos uma hegemonia como espécie, criamos muitas barreiras e separações entres ricos e pobres, castas e classes sociais, cores de pele e religiões.

A obra também nos provoca a pensar no tema entre opressor e oprimido e como quem é oprimido acaba querendo se tornar o opressor.

É um bom livro, apesar da leitura meio lenta cansativa, recomendo demais a obra do tcheco Karel Capek pelo quanto ela nos faz refletir.
