Comfort Snowberger's family lives in Mississippi, in a funeral home, which is also owned by her. Her family consists of her father Bunch, her mother Joy, her older brother Tidings, her little sister Merry, and her much-loved "funeral dog extraordinaire", Dismay. Comfort had attended 247 funerals, and has a best friend named Declaration, and a snot nosed cousin named Peach, whom she dislikes. When Uncle Edisto and Aunt Florentine die, there's only one person who really takes it seriously--Peach. Comfort is very worried about funeral 248, as she has to take care of Peach after the funeral. All Comfort wants to do is hide in her closet. All of the sudden, Declaration turns downright mean, and Comfort she realizes that a true friend was there all along-- Peach. On the way to the funeral, Declaration upsets Peach enough to get both him and Comfort to run away, where they face danger in the newly much-deepened Snapfinger Creek. Dismay floats down the stream alone, and goes missing. Dismay's collar is found by Declaration close to a drainage ditch near Lake Tallyhoma. Knowing he is dead, Snapfinger holds a memorial service for the dog. Declaration and Comfort still are upset with each other but Peach becomes a better person in Comfort's eyes. The book tells about how death is a part of life, and how the biggest surprise in life is learning how to handle surprises themselves.
