Kafka transformed the possibilities of the short story, his unique imagination giving his dark tales a sense of dream-like logic and unreality, in which their horrors are humorous and unease pervades. In these two stories, a traveller is shown the workings of an elaborate machine with a bloody purpose, and a son awakens unimagined resentments in his father.

Undoubtedly, an excellent piece of writing. I am giving only 3.5 stars because it?s not my type of book. It?s suspenseful, but in a very creepy manner, which is not comfortable for me to read in anyway. I finished because I really loved Kafka?s Metamorphosis. However, the creepiness of the Penal Colony and the bad feelings I had throughout the plot did stop me from getting a deeper reflection and interpretation of the story.... leia mais
