my favorite book
almost two years ago a very close friend of mine told me to read this book that, honestly, i didn’t find very interesting, but she teased me a little and i bought it. and it became my favorite book. EVER.
remember when taylor swift said “who could ever leave me, darling? but who could stay?” in ‘the archer’? she probably had just fineshed ‘the seven husbands of evelyn hugo.’
evelyn hugo, born evelyn elena herrera, was the biggest star of the 50′s, and stayed at the top for 3 decades, something very impressive, but despite her talent and beauty, there’s something else that helped evelyn to always be in the spotlights: gossip. the hollywood star got married 7 times, scandals about affairs and cheat were always there in evelyn’s life. now, everyone she ever loved is long gone, she lives alone in manhattan and want a unknown journalist called monique to write her biography - and no telling why she choose her; at least not NOW. but eve’s telling it all, behind the scenes of every movie and every marriage - including who was the biggest love of her life, ‘cause, c’mon, after 7 husbands, gotta have a favorite, right? a most loved. make your bets, read and find out.
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo is not what you are expecting, is so much more. i fell in love in every page, even the ones that hurted me the most. to be honest, if evelyn was real and i meet her, i don’t know if would wanna hug or punch her. taylor jenkins reid made a perfect dubious character, we can love most time but hate so much by certain acts; which makes it the most real, because no one is perfect, there’s no flawless human being, and she delivers that in the most glamorous scenario possible: 60′s hollywood.
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo will end you. you will laugh and cry so hard you’ll think you won’t ever be happy again, and two days after will read it all like it’s a need to survive. simply a raising classic. a book that brings friendship, dreams, work, love and family as much as it brings social topics like domestic violence, sexualization of women bodies, racism and lgbtq+ rights without severe words that look like a lesson, but will make you reflect, and will change you. so its a lesson, but not a boring one.
theres nothing like this book out there, and i promise, once you finish, you’ll google “evelyn hugo existed” just to check if she ain’t really real, ‘cause somehow, tjr made the most palpable character ever.
“...do yourself a favor and learn to grab life by the balls, dear. don’t be so tied up in trying to do the right thing when the smart thing is so painfully clear.”
