Xenophon’s Anabasis is the true story of an epic conquest. In roughly 400 B.C., the Greek Army, known as the Ten Thousand, embarked on a mission to take over Persia. Xenophon, a Greek writer, went along with them to record the historic feat. After sustaining devastating losses in Persia, the Ten Thousand, partly on Xenophon’s own advice, made a bold decision to move north, making their way to the Black Sea. This would be no easy task, as their ranks were diminished, their supplies were dwindling, and their strength was failing them. Reaching the Black Sea would require every last ounce of courage and determination that the army had, and Xenophon details the thrilling battles, tragic losses, and heroic efforts at every step of the way.
