The last volume of the fabulously popular A Series of Unfortunate Events series, in which the history of the Baudelaire orphans is brought to its end.

You are presumably looking at the back of this book, or the end of the end. The end of the end is the best place to begin the end, because if you read the end from the beginning of the beginning of the end to the end of the end of the end, you will arrive at the end of the end of your rope.

This book is the last in A Series of Unfortunate Events, and even if you braved the previous twelve volumes, you probably can't stand such unpleasantries as a fearsome storm, a suspicious beverage, a herd of wild sheep, an enormous bird cage, and a truly haunting secret about the Baudelaire parents.

It has been my solemn occupation to complete the history of the Baudelaire orphans, and at last I am finished. You likely have some other occupation, so if I were you I would drop this book at once, so the end does not finish you.

Como consequência do que acontece no fim do volume anterior, os três Baudelaire acabam tornando-se náufragos em uma ilha, à qual chegaram juntamente do conde Olaf.

"Even though we're shipwrecked, we’re still in the same boat."

É muito irônico e engraçado ver como o fato de estarem nessa situação, isolados do resto da cidade, das instituições policiais, bancárias e de justiça faz com que nenhum deles - nem o conde Olaf nem os Baudelaire - consigam alcançar seus objetivos. Já que não há ninguém que possa julgar e prender Olaf por seus crimes, mas também ninguém que possa conceder a ele a fortuna dos Baudelaire.

Depois de um tempo, eles descobrem que há pessoas vivendo na ilha, e aos poucos as crianças vão percebendo que aquele lugar está muito mais relacionado à história deles, de seus pais e de todos os mistérios que permeiam sua família do que poderiam imaginar.

O livro foi uma leitura bem divertida, além de trazer algumas reflexões muito interessantes sobre o bem e o mal, abusos de autoridade e manipulação, sempre com o uso de várias metáforas e analogias, além do tom irônico e característico do narrador.

Esse encerramento não trás respostas para todos os mistérios que foram levantados ao longo da série mas, ainda assim, achei bastante satisfatório e condizente com o que já vinha sendo construído até aqui.
