Having grown up in London and rural southern England, Margaret Hale moves with her father to the northern industrial city of Milton. She is shocked by the poverty she encounters and dismayed by the unsympathetic attitude of the textile-mill owner John Thornton, whose factory workers are engaged in an acrimonious strike. Against this backdrop of social unrest, the relationship between the two is tumultuous, and it takes further upheaval and tragedy for them to see each other in a different light.

First serialized in Dickens’s magazine Household Words in the same period as Hard Times, North and South shares its famous counterpart’s concern with the inequality and hardship generated by the Industrial Revolution in northern England, while at the same time creating one of the nineteenth century’s most memorable and engaging female protagonists in Margaret Hale.

Elizabeth Gaskell é raramente referenciada junto com Jane Austen ou Charlotte Brontë apesar da insistência editorial em colocá-las em coleções românticas ou publicações similares. O motivo é que a autora, especialmente nessa obra, não se furta em discutir questões sociais e econômicas na Inglaterra vitoriana.

North and South poderia facilmente ser descrito como um romance socialista por suas críticas ao sistema capitalista em sua fase industrial - o personagem principal, Thornton, é dono de uma fábrica de tecidos e os acontecimentos principais da trama são catalisadores ou resultados da política exploratória da época.

Margaret, a responsável por boa parte da narrativa, é o par romântico cujo drama e rejeição são baseados na violência e representação da mulher em tal sociedade. Apenas por essa dicotomia, essa já seria uma obra altamente recomendável.

Contudo, vale lembrar que essa é uma história romântica. Thornton é a quintessência do cavalheiro inglês desse estilo, profundamente enamorado e respeitador das escolhas e decisões de Margaret. É um Mr. Darcy que precisa trabalhar, é um Rochester honesto.
