Richard Julius Herman Krebs, a.k.a. Jan Valtin, rose both within the ranks of the Communist Party and the Gestapo. Krebs dedicated his life to the Communist Party, rising to a position as head of secret service, only to flee the Party and Europe to evade his own comrade’s attempts to kill him. As a professional revolutionary and spy and would-be assassin, Krebs traveled the globe from Germany to China, India to Sierra Leon, Moscow to the United States where a botched assassination attempt landed him a stint in San Quentin State Prison.

Um livro talvez não muito envolvente, mas rico onde se pode encontrar algo a se agarrar. O protagonista/autor é grande exemplo de como uma pessoa pode se deixar levar por seus ideais até não sobrar nada, portanto acaba sendo uma leitura levemente dolorosa. Gostei, apesar de ser bem diferente do que costumo ler. Requer tempo, dedicação e perseverança para conseguir se envolver com a história, mas uma vez feito, vale a pena. A segunda metade, sanguinária e visceral, é talvez de maior riqueza que a primeira – é meio frustrante esperar passar a metade do livro pra finalmente sentir ele cumprir o que prometeu.
Foi agradável. Triste e desesperançoso, mas agradável.
