Em 1964, Michael Moorcock pôs no papel a última história de seu subversivo e pioneiro anti-herói, Elric de Melniboné. A revista Amazing Fantasy, lar das histórias do albino até então, estava prestes a ser descontinuada. Fazia sentido, então, que as quatro histórias que culminam com o fim de Elric tossem escritas e publivadas ali.
