Vive la guerre
Starship Troopers is a unique book, very hard to classify. It is science fiction, of that one can be sure, but in spite of being classified as “action” or “adventure” it doesn’t have a lot of those, what it does have is debates, loads of them.
It is narrated in first person by Johnnie Rico, a young upper class adult who decides to join the military against his father will. The story goes by the traditional events in military novel: Bootcamp, action, death of friends in combat, the rise to officership and so on.
As I have mentioned above, the discussions and positions in the book are amazing, The society described has many different views on citizenship, suffrage, civil responsibilities etc. One must recognize the book does flirt a bit with fascism, but it would be unwise to simply declassify it by this, the author defends it so cleverly that it begs to be discussed.
There are also some beautifully written lines with a considerable literary value, I would highlight both letters the main character receives, and some witted passages mocking the military life. One I still remember is during training a character complains about having to train in the dirty prairies to which one replies he shouldn’t complain; otherwise the sergeant would make them clean the prairies up!
A last note would be about the movie, people tend to always criticize movies when comparing them to books, conveniently forgetting they are completely different medias. What one should have in mind is that the movie has cutted out all the discussions of the book (with the single exception of a single dialogue between a professor and Rico right at the beginning of the movie) and has focused on the action. But I do feel they are the same story.
